2014 Martha Stoumen Sparkling Zinfandel Rosé
(Green Valley, Solano County, California) $30
Martha Stoumen is one of California’s rapidly rising star winemakers. A Davis grad, she worked and traveled in Europe and New Zealand before returning home to California to make her own wine. Her wines are not only delicious, but also have an individuality that sets them apart. This méthode ancestral sparkling wine goes down a little bit too easy, but only 40 cases were made so you might want to savor every sip.
Vineyard: Sourced from a 51-year-old vineyard in the Green Valley in Solano County with decomposed indigenous rock.
Farming: Practicing organic.
Vinification: The fruit from 2014 was whole cluster pressed and aged on its lees for 12 months in neutral oak. Fermenting juice from 2015 was then added (it made up 8% of the final blend). It was bottled, fermented and then aged for 17 months.
Tasting Note: Delicate yet lively with savory berries and a soft mousse.
Food Pairing: I’m thinking brunch – pancakes or French toast with berries, but Martha says, “Oysters, seaweed salad, fresh bread and cultured butter, watermelon salad with feta and herbs, anchovies and generally, things from the sea, briny things, cultured/slightly pungent things, also great with almost any salad.”
