Vineyard Gate in Millbrae is almost a secret. If you are looking for natural wine in the South Bay (San Mateo, Santa Clara counties), this is it. Just 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco, it has one of the best natural wine selections in the Bay Area yet few know about it…or realize that Millbrae, which is just one exit south of SFO, is in California. You’ll find funky, esoteric wines as well as more recognizable labels and some old school, if not necessarily natural, bottles from California. Another plus, because it is not in the thick of it, coveted natural wines that sell out quickly in other spots tend to stay around a little bit longer here.
Weimax Wines & Spirits
1178 Broadway, Burlingame 94010
Shopping at Weimax reminds me of going to a vintage shop on Haight Street. You never know what you’ll discover. I found some older (2007) Domaine Closel Savennières on the racks last year. While it is not a natural wine store, several Bay Area based natural wine importers do a fair amount of business with them so if you are looking for natural wines on the Peninsula, add them to the list.
