2016 Domaine de Saint Pierre Savagnin Autrement ($45)
Domaine Saint Pierre was created in the 80’s by Philippe Moyne, a Parisien lawyer who had a house in the town St. Pierre – Sous – Vadans in the Jura. He hired Fabrice Dodane, a University of Beaune enology graduate, in 1989. The land was converted to organic viticulture in 2002. Moyne passed away in 2011 and Dodane, who was now in complete control, received organic certification in 2012.
Vineyard: Calcarious clay and limestone.
Farming: Certified organic. Manual harvest.
Vinification: Native yeast fermentation in old French and Austrian foudres. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: This is made as in the ouillé style wine meaning it is topped off, as opposed to other Jura whites that are often allowed to oxidize. Mineral driven and smoky with apples, citrus, vanilla and hazelnuts it is fresh and clean but at the same time , rich. Give it a few hours to open up and don’t serve it too cold…a mild chill is fine. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
Food Pairing: Food Pairing: This is a wine with an intellectual component so I would not want to have food that is too distracting. A good hunk of Comté cheese would be perfect.
Drinkability: Now – 2022.
SO2: 20mg/liter added at bottling.
